Platform: Steps to a Cure
Talent: Singing
Desiree Umber is the 18-year-old daughter of John and Gloria Umber of Viking, Minnesota. She has two sibilings: Steven and Amanda.
Desiree graduated this spring from Marshall County Central High School in Newfolden, Minnesota, and plans to attend Minnesota State University Moorhead this fall to pursue a degree in Mass Communications and a minor in Music. In high school she was active in choir, band, Riverwatch, Envirothon, cheerleading, and track. She was also involved in Honor Choir at Northland Community and Technical College.
Desiree is always willing to sing the National Anthem at any event and is also a well- known performer at churches, weddings, and community events. She is also involved in her church’s Bell Choir. She has participated in Relay For Life and has recently organized her own team called the Turkey Trotters.
Desiree’s platform is entitled, “Steps to a Cure.” Her platform is focused on becoming involved in finding a cure for cancer.

Platform: Importance of giving blood
Talent: Singing
Bailey-Claire Sorvig is the 18 year old daughter of Gary and Shelby Sorvig of St. Hilaire, MN. Her family includes two brothers Tate (25), Cooper (13) and one sister Madison (22).
Bailey is a 2011 graduate of Lincoln Senior High School and plans to attend the University of North Dakota this Fall to pursue degrees in both business and music.
In high school, she was elected Junior and Senior class President and was chosen to attend both HOBY and RYLA leadership camps. Bailey was on the National Honor Society Executive Board and was also a student representative on the School Board and TRF Education Foundation board. She enjoyed participating in Concert Choir and Swingsations where she received many awards and was a member of the Minnesota All-State Choir. She was also fortunate to be able to sing at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City (which was a trip of a lifetime!) Bailey kept active as a Prowler swimmer and track athlete and loved managing the Prowler Boys Basketball Team.
Bailey chose the importance of giving blood as her platform because she recognizes that giving blood means saving lives!
Alexandria Alten
Platform: Seld-Discipline and Child Development Within Music
Talent: Playing the Guitar
Alexandria Beth Alten is the 19-year-old daughter of Riley and Christine Fish of Oslo, Minnesota and Alfred Alten, Jr. of Badger, Minnesota She is a 2010 graduate of Warren/Alvarado/Oslo High School in Warren, Minnesota. She is currently attending Northland Community and Technical College in East Grand Forks, Minnesota, pursuing a career as a music and foreign language teacher. She has two sisters, Laura (13) and Sadie (10).
While in high school, Alexandria was a member of the National Society of High School Scholars. An honor for her was being selected to attend the International Honor Band at the Peace Gardens in North Dakota. She has lettered in band and choir.
Alexandria has been dancing for nine years and was an assistant dance instructor and student teacher. She has been an assistant Brownie Girl Scout leader and a counselor at Diabetic Camp. She is currently working at Polaris Industries in Roseau until returning to college in August.
Alexandria’s platform is “Self-Discipline and Child Development Within Music.” She will promote her platform by talking to students about how important music is to childhood development.
Shelby Johnson
Platform: The Power of a Passion
Talent: Singing
Shelby Jane Johnson is the 18-year-old daughter of Kevin and Annette Johnson of Thief River Falls. Her family includes one brother, Trevor (14).
Shelby is a 2011 graduate of Lincoln Senior High School in Thief River Falls and plans to attend St. Cloud State University this fall to pursue a degree in marketing and mass communications, with the hope to become an event planner. In high school, Shelby was on the honor roll and was the treasurer of her class for all four years of high school. She has lettered in choir and was a member of the LHS Concert Choir that toured New York City in 2010. In high school she was a CAP Student, working with the mentally handicapped. She also was a member of the TRF FFA, and competed at the state level in floriculture.
Shelby has been figure skating since she was four years of age. She has lettered in figure skating and currently is a figure skating coach. As a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls, Shelby has taught Sunday School for the past two years.
Shelby is currently employed as a waitress at China King in Thief River Falls.

Platform: In Harm's Way: Suicide Among Teens
Talent: Singing and dancing
Michelle Stahlecker is the 18-year-old daughter of Trent and Kathy Stahlecker of Crookston, MN. Her family includes one sister Kayla (12).
Michelle is a 2011 graduate of Crookston High School and plans to attend the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks this fall for a degree in Theater. In high school she was active in True Players; Leo Club; one-act and three-act plays; visual arts; marching, pep, and concert band; varsity tennis and hockey; and Yearbook Committee.
In 2010, Michelle was crowned Miss Crookston. She is a Catholic Church “Apostle,” a religious education teacher for Junior High.
Michelle currently works at Happy Joe’s in Crookston, a job she has had for the past three years.
Michelle’s platform is “In Harm’s Way: Suicide Among Teens.” If crowned Miss TRF, she would talk to teens in schools about the negative effects of suicide and depression and how to catch early signs of it in friends.
Hannah Waswick

Platform: Music and Art: A Lifelong Lesson
Talent: Singing
Hannah Waswick is the 19 year-old daughter of Kelly and Bruce Thygeson and Paul Waswick and Lawni Young of Thief River Falls, MN. Her family includes brother Marshall (22), sister LeeAnn (18), and brother Hollis (4).
Hannah Waswick is a 2009 graduate of Lincoln High School and plans to attend Northland Community and Technical College with hopes of transferring to Bemidji State University. She will be pursuing a degree in Special Education with a Minor in Music Education. In high school, she was active in swimming and diving, figure skating, Magnet Visual Arts, CAP, orchestra, choir, and speech.
Her work experience includes being a sales associate at JC Penney, labor worker at Thygeson Construction, and a waitress at the VFW. In the past, she has worked at Pennington Main and has also been a babysitter for family and friends.
Her platform is entitled “Music and Art: A Lifelong Lesson”. If she wins the title of Miss Thief River Falls, she will take her platform and spread the love of music and hopefully have more kids involved with their music programs offered at school.
